Gramvousa nowdays is an important bird habitat in the Eastern Mediterranean region and is located along one of the bird migration ways in this part of the world. It is the habitat of over 100 bird species and 400 kinds of plants. Built 137m above sea level on this rocky island. it is one of the most impressive castles in Crete and worth the 15 minute hike up the footpath. Appropriate footwear is advisable and a hat in summer. You will ample time on the beach to explore, relax and swim in the warm and crystal water.
This boat is perfect for prrivate sailing in the best coasts of South Crete. The trip begins from Chora Sfakion. There we visit Loutro, a small picturesque fishing village in south west Crete, not yet spoilt by mass tourism.
Marmara beach is one of the most popular beaches in Sfakia, Crete.
It is located on at the exit from the Gorge of Aradena. The beach has pebbles and the crystal-clear water is beyond any doubt. A little higher from the sea level and the beach there is a tavern up on the cliff, over viewing the coastline of the southern Crete and the exit from the Aradena gorge. We can have a lunch in Cretan traditional food.
Then we will continue our trip to the beach Agios Pavlos, you can swim in the crystal sea and visit the small church.
The chapel of Agios Pavlos was built in the 11th century at the spot where Saint Paul is supposed to have been shipwrecked on his journey to Crete and Greece. It is located a little to the east of Agia Roumeli, right by the sea. A few frescoes are still visible inside the chapel but they are in poor condition. A concrete reinforcement was built along the sea side of the chapel in order to prevent the sea from eroding its base.
We continue in Agia Roumeli
Agia Roumeli is situated in one of the wildest regions of Crete with rare flora, fauna and geology. Being the exit of the Samaria Gorge National Park, the strong sun in combination with the salty sea and almost deserted beaches give you a unique sense of nurturing solitude.
